Susan James – Driving Toward the Sun BY SIMON, ON APRIL 25TH, 2013

Music that’s like a wave of solar rays rolling over you it’s so easy to kick back and let the melodies do their thing, there’s something distinctly West Coast about the album from the LA singer-songwriter Susan James on her new album Driving Toward the Sun though the California sunshine is carefully tempered by the beautiful clouded melancholy of the albums main themes of love twisted, torn and lost, when accompanied by the sound that only a weeping pedal steel can convey the under-lying sadness is beautifully accentuated.

It’s the kind of album that puts me in another mood, place and time, so I’m in reflective mode, back in 90′s and driving East, early morning, on a country-rock highway – great music has that ability to do that and James’ writing is carefully crafted by the singer-songwriter and the albums main contributors, producer Ryan Ulyate (Tom Petty, George Harrison), Neal Casal on guitar, drummer Don Heffington (Buddy Miller, The Jayhawks, The Wallflowers, Kathleen Edwards) and Eric Heywood (Son Volt, Richard Buckner, Alejandro Escovedo, Peter Bruntnell) team up to produce the goods.

Breaking up is hard to do – load up the worldly possessions and hit the highway.
